Demand Reduction Introduction

In this session, attendees will learn about what demand reduction is and how it has the capacity to reduce human trafficking. This session is also an introduction to the NC Demand Reduction Task Force.

Introduction to Panelists:

Nicole Bernard

Nicole is the mother of four children, author of A War Against the Cowbird, and former host of the Red X Podcast. She served the anti-trafficking organization, Transforming Hope, for four years and worked in a variety of advocacy, service and behavioral research positions before founding Shield NC. Nicole is the current chair of the North Carolina Coalition Against Human Trafficking.


Bren Journey

Bren is a published author of Cambodia’s first and only Human Trafficking Prevention Notebook “Safety with Sopheap”. She has served Stateside and abroad with survivors, assisting in developing policy and procedures for safe homes, leading retreats to house parents and workers for self-care and burnout prevention. She is honored to have served as a volunteer for over 15 years. Bren has been at the front lines of public health anti-violence advocacy prevention and education for over 20 years. She was formerly with the Trafficking in American Task Force leading the “Sister Walk” Initiative as well as assisting in Law Enforcement Trainings. Bren has also had the honor of working alongside Salvation Army, Rescue Mission, On Eagles Wings, Child Helpline, Chab Dai Coalition, Love146, Rapha House, as well as Teen Challenge. She has developed and led many trainings for college professors, social workers, students of all ages, as well as medical personnel on equality, equity, and disparities within our society that lead to unhealthy relationships; familial trafficking/abuse. Bren currently serves on the Life 107 Board and one of the founding leaders of NC Demand Reduction Taskforce. Like many in the field of public health profession Bren is best described as an impatient optimist that drives Hope home in every relationship.


Niki Miller

Niki Miller serves on the leadership team of the NC Demand Reduction Task Force. She is also the Operations Specialist at Shield North Carolina and an Ambassador of Hope with Shared Hope International. Through her studies for her Master’s degree in Professional Counseling, Nike was connected with the Sex Abuse Treatment Unit of the Wake County Department of Human Services. While working with this Unit, she served as a therapist to juvenile survivors of sexual abuse. She also had the responsibility of rehabilitating juvenile sex offenders through both group and individual therapy.


Pam Strickland

Pam first became interested in the subject of Human Trafficking at a Missions Conference in 2006 where she learned about young girls being forced into prostitution in Asia. Since then, she has led three Mission Trips to Moldova, where part of the team’s job was to educate the young people about trafficking, in an effort to prevent them from becoming victims. Pam speaks frequently to community groups, as well as conducting training for professional and pre-professional groups (such as social workers, counselors, teachers, law enforcement, nurses, physician’s assistants, and others). Pam is passionate about preventing labor trafficking internationally by educating people about Fair Trade and responsible consumerism. Pam earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1990. Since then, she has been involved with the management of her family’s business-Electronic Services, Inc. Pam is the Founder of the NC Stop Human Trafficking and serves as its Chief Executive Officer. Pam has been training professionals in North Carolina about the reality of human trafficking for more than a decade. Under her leadership, NC Stop Human Trafficking founded and facilitate the Pitt County Coalition Against Human Trafficking and the Pitt County Human Trafficking Multidisplinary Team, as well as becoming one of the founding organizations of the N.C. Demand Reduction Taskforce. Pam has spoken across the state in communities about what human trafficking is and how to prevent it. She has also developed curriculum for foster parents, guardians ad litem, human trafficking 101 for the community, and making the connection between human trafficking and pornography.
